Abstract  [Objective] This paper aims at investigating the origin and research status of citizen science related studies abroad to yield some implications for the future direction of this field in China. [Coverage] 1796 papers were retrieved from the Web of Science (WOS) core data, using the keywords of “citizen science”, “crowd science”, etc. [Methods] Employing the methods of bibliometrics, social network and content analysis, combined with visualization tools, to achieve an understanding on the evolution path of citizen science and the hot research topics in this field. The paper also reveals the research status quo of citizen science in Library and Information Science domain. [Results] The results show that with the development of the Internet and the popularization of all kinds of intelligent mobile techniques, the crowd wisdom and open science paradigm are highly emphasized. Based on the mass participation and collaboration, citizen science is attracting more and more attention from the academia and industry. The current research hotspots can be classified as three levels, namely project perspective, theoretical perspective and participant perspective. In addition, although the main focus on citizen science research can be attributed to the field of natural science, we also notice that the Library and Information Science domain has paid considerable attention to the relevant field and achieved some outcomes, which may show more potential in the future research. [Limitations] The study was carried out only by the evolution of papers’ keywords rather than the full texts. [Conclusions] Library and Information Science has the advantages on resource management and data management, and it will play an important role in the future study of citizen science.
