Research on the Impact of Clue Consistency on Purchasing Decisions of Peer-to-Peer Accommodation Platform: Interaction between Text and Image Clues

Abstract  

[Objective] This paper aims to find out the influence of the cues consistency on tenants’ purchase decision, by explaining the cues of different characters on the shared accommodation. [Methods] First, based on the Cues Consistency Theory, we constructed the research model from the perspective of both User-generated Content (UGC) and Marketer-generated content (MGC). Then, we conducted an empirical study on the data obtained from Xiaozhu.com – a well-known short-term renting website in China. Finally, we studied the influence of cue consistency on tenants’ purchase decision. [Results] The purchase decision of tenants was positively associated with the text clues of UGC and warm color picture of MGC. Also, the information consistency between UGC and MGC has a significant positive impact on purchase decision. [Limitations] The extraction of image parameters needs to be expanded. In the future research, we can further identify the home style from the pictures. [Conclusions] Focusing on the information cues provided from two-sided users of the platform, this study provides references and guidelines for both shared accommodation platforms managers and landlords on related platforms.
