Two Web search tools, namely, AltaVista and Sohu, were evaluated and compared in terms of their composition of Web indexes, search capability, retrieval performance, output option, and user effort. Recall is deliberately omitted from this study because for a particular query it is impossible to assume how many relevant items there are in the huge and ever changing Web system. In addition, the author introduces two new parameters, e.g. duplicate links and dead links, for the evaluation. As a result, the autho ranalyses the gap between Chinese and English Web search tools and indicates the different evaluation methodologies between them.
