Abstract  

Z39.50 has special advantages concerning of information search and retrieval from heterogeneous systems. The purpose of a Z39.50/Web gateway is to extend the scope of application of Z39.50 by taking advantage of the ease and accessibility provided by the Web. The paper first introduces some of major aspects of Z39.50 standard. And then the model of developing Web-based Z39.50 applications is discussed. At last the rules for designing and implementing a practical Z39.50/Web gateway system for bibliographic information search and retrieval are mainly described.
