While libraries become digital, digitization becomes more and more crucial affecting libraries. This study investigates current practice of digitizing library materials in the US. Building a good digital collection has been a common task pervasive in all types of libraries. With challenges that pose the most significant problems or concerns for libraries in digitization practice, researchers and practitioners would like to know what practices have been developed to deal with them? Through probing some widespread issues on what materials to digitize and associated standards and technologies in digitization in the United States libraries, this survey of current literature reveals a number of prominent library digitization practices, methods and challenges, and highlights the best practices, trends and interests in library digitization pertaining to both policy and technology marketplace issues.

One common method for query expansion is relevance feedback, and much research work has been done to it. Relevance feedback focuses two aspects: term reweighting and term selection. In this paper, the authors elaborate a few classical term ranking methods, and compare them in retrieval performance. At last, they discuss the problems in implementing relevance feedback.
Using real examples in the curriculum of information retrieval, the author introduced the use of RealPresenter, a popular encoding tool for streaming media, to transform the static courseware made in Powerpoint into the streaming courseware. This novel format allows us to include all possible live audio and video information given by lecturers in the tranditional coursewares. In addition, taking use of streaming servers, these novel coursewares can be easily streamed as Video-On-Demand through the campus network.

This paper mainly discusses key problems in long-term preservation of digital resources, and gives solutions about metadata encoding, data processing and user interface.
The inverted file is the most popular indexing mechanism in an information retrieval system. Compressing an inverted file can greatly improve document search rate and save disk space. Traditionally, the d-gaps technique is used in the inverted file compression by replacing document identifiers with usually much smaller gap values. However, fluctuating gap values cannot be efficiently compressed by some well-known prefix-free codes. In this paper, a document identifier reassignment algorithm is proposed to reduce the gap values. Simulation results show that the average gap values of the inverted files can be reduced effectively.

The Wireless Local Area Network(WLAN) use wireless communication technology to realize network connection. Compared with wired network, the main advantage of wireless LAN is that it is unlimited by wire, and it can provide network connection conveniently in the place where the wired LAN can't work. In April 2002, we set up wireless local area network in Tsinghua University Library. The wireless network was built using the products according with
IEEE 802.11b wireless network standard. This article introduces the establishment and application of the wireless local area network in Tsinghua University Library, and discusses the characteristics and development trend of setting up wireless network in library.
