An architecture, functions and relative technology of a service-orientated DL are discussed in this article. Years of research and development of some key techniques and related technologies of digital library have established an important technical foundation for developing a practical digital library. A dozen of digital Libraries can be summarized in three main types as the following: a DL of special collection; a service-orientated DL; a DL with commercial database. Architecture of a service-orientated DL: It is based on an electronically resources which are accessed through a unique interface. Metadata structure and extended rules are two keys while designing descriptive metadata. This study focuses on these two key problems, and illustrates the metadata basic structure, the composing elements and the extended rules according to the practice metadata standards of rare books, rubbings and atlases. It will enhance interoperability among the metadata standards for different resource objects that these problems are considered in metadata designing.

The entity layers described by FRBR help us select a proper level for resource description, and decide on the relevant structure of the elements in line with the resource characteristics and user needs. Besides, the 3-dimensional structure of the FRBR model inspires us with a new thought on metadata structures.
