On July8-12, 2002, the international conference Digital Library—Opportunities and Challenges of Information Technology in the New Millennium, organized by the Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China held in Beijing. This paper summarizes the main ideas and practices presented to the conference.
The study of digital library is booming. Now traditional library is converting to digital library,this needs the application and integration of the latest information technologies for the maximum usage and share of network information resources. Traditional system analysis and design methods can't guarantee the efficiency and quality. Using UML in developing digital library can quicken the process, improve the code quality, support the dynamic needs and easily integrate the traditional resources. This is a hopeful application field for UML.
How XML is applied to the digital library systems is introduced in this paper. The major features of XML are reviewed and compared with those of HTML.The subsystem of the Korean Virtual Library and Information System(VINIS)，an experimental XMLbased metadata retrieval system is demonstrated here. This subsystem consists of two modules: a retrieval module and a browsing module. The retrieval module allows the retrieval of metadata stored in Microsoft access files and the display of search result in a XML file format. The browsing module allows browsing of metadata in XMUXSL file format. Finally, the way how XML will be more efficiently applied in digital libraries is discussed.
The exponential growth of Web resources has posed several challenges in collecting, preserving and providing access to the content of digital library. This paper discusses the necessity of Web preservation, a few major projects in this area and makes some further discussion of five key issues.

Based on an analysis on existing problems with search engines, the paper concludes on the intelligent trends in the third generation search engines.

A new dynamic search system based on the Fish search algorithm, one of the first and most famous dynamic search algorithms, was implemented in this paper. In the new system, some parts of the Fish search algorithm were also refined to enable users to tailor the web sites more familiar to their interests. The author believes that the new system improves over the original Fish search algorithm.
